How do you start a garden?

I’ve never had a vegitable garden before but would like to try it this year. What kinds of plants should I start with and when do I plant? I live in the Texas Panhandle.

Citizen asked:

Because they use water that all of the roommate pay for, I want to make it fair to everyone but there is no way to determine exactly how much more water the garden uses.
Should I charge them a full portion of the bill (ie if there are 3 renters and 1 gardener, charge everyone 25% of the bill each month)?
Should I charge them a flat fee? If so, how much?
The garden is 13′x10′.

I do magic often and sometimes for events. I was recently asked if I would be able to entertain at a lawn/ garden party. I was wondering what kind of magic I should do for this event. Difficulty is not an issue, but the demonstrations can’t be too geared for stage performances, becasue this has to be fairly casual and impromptu. But, however, they can’t be too simple, like easy coin and card magic. They have to impress people, not prove I can go to Chapters and perform tricks from a $5.99 book. Any suggestions or ideas?

Yvonne asked:

Hi, how long and how often should I water sprinkle my veggie garden? 1/2 hour? 1 hour? How long is enough? We’re on a well not city water and we have plenty…

Astburies asked:

I’ve decided to take up gardening in our new home and would like to spruce up the curb appeal. What kinds of plants should I incorporate into my New England garden that would withstand the climate? I would also like input on a pretty flowering bush that would be relatively low-maintenance. (I’m fine with trimming, but prefer a bush that doesn’t need constant trimming!) Also I would appreciate input on a bush/tree that might work well for privacy? Our yard is not very private, and I would prefer plants instead of a fence for privacy.

Right now, I have one lilac bush and a few daffodils, however I’m trying to get rid of the daffodils (I have infant triplets and two dogs who are in the yard often, and I’m afraid they will injest them - the triplets may come in contact with them as they get older). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Skeptic asked:

We have a section of lawn that we will convert to a herb and vegetable garden. It has grass and weeds. Can we simply rototill the ground, enrich the earth with organic fertilizer and compost? Is it better to remove the sod first?

I am a city girl living in the country now. I have a wonderful garden of beans, tomatoes and cantalope (we ate all the radishes and green onions). I’d like to try my hand at canning but I do not have the first clue, or if it’s even too hard to attempt…help!

I live in an apartment with a balcony. I would like to grow my own vegetables and herbs such as cilantro. How do I build a vegetable garden on my balcony. Lots of sun shines on my balcony in the morning and some to none by mid-afternoon/evening. I appreciate your gardening wisdom.

I’m making raised beds for my vegetable garden and for obvious reasons can’t use pressure treated lumber. I was thinking of using 1×10s, but cedar or redwood are not in my price range. does anyone know of anything I could do to treat pine that won’t leach into the soil and kill me? also, I have a ton of the original siding from my house (built in 1948) up in my attic. it’s about 1″ thick and 8″ wide and I have it in lengths of 8-10′ long. It’s been painted on one side, and I’m not sure what kind of wood it is. does anyone know if old siding is historically treated w/ anything nasty to make it fire resistant or age better? and would the paint pose a potential problem? the wood is in good shape, but I’m not sure how safe it would be to use. any thoughts?
