Short of putting up a fence, my dog chooses to use the bathroom on the rocks in my garden. I clean it up, show him where I want him to go, but he keeps choosing the same spot. Any suggestions?

I live in Chicago. I have a container garden, approzimately 60″ long, 20″ wide, 16″ tall. It still cold at nite here, so the box is actually a cold frame, covered by a piece of insulated glass I found a while back. A couple of weeks ago, I transplanted one strawberry, two tomato, and one basil plant. The basil is dead, strawberry looks dead, and the tomatoes are withering. As for the soil, every year, I go to a city site where I get compost, which I add to the mix. However, since I can’t make myself spend a bunch of money on vermiculite, I’m only guessing the soil may not be draining well; even after not watering for 3 or 4 days, below an inch the soil is still damp. About a week ago I dug up about a dozen worms, and transplanted them to the container, but no improvement so far. Calling all green thumbs: SOS!

I’m starting an herb garden and I’m going to buy the seedlings today, but I’m not sure what I should buy. What are some commonly used herbs that are easy to grow? Also, I’d like to put in at least one butterfly-attracting plant, so what are some of those? It doesn’t matter if that one is an herb. Thanks.

I have planted a large garden, but see rabbit and deer all around our area. Is there anything I can put out that will repel them without harming them or my garden? Thanks!

please answer if you really know how to get a container garden going from the very basics. Thank you for your time.
Also, we would like to use all organic materials.

We have lots of stray cats in our neighborhood. And every night couple of them come to do their “needs” in our small garden. I really don’t know what to do to prevent them from jumping the high fence we have and use our garden for their needs. please help, the smell they leave is intolerable!

Alfredster asked:

I’ve been told that if you water the garden during the day, the grass will not absorb it well since it will evaporate because of the sun. However, during the night the plant are not active because there is no sun so they don’t use the water? I don’t know a thing really, I’m just guessing.

I’ve always enjoyed working outside with the earth and plants. I thought about becoming a Landscaper for awhile but now I’m into computers. Just tonight I saw at this College’s website that I am thinking about going to, they have a major for Garden Design. Does that help with becoming a landscaper for a business like that?

I am wanting to turn a small area of my yard into a butterfly/hummingbird garden. What sort of plants would be best to plant there (prefer annual plants)? I live in IN if that helps and any websites you could direct me to would be great!
Thanks!
